An official of the E & J Gallo Winery warned that if the company is forced to put pollution control equipment on its huge fermentation tanks, it could cause the spill of hundreds of thousands of gallons of wine. Art Caputi Jr., director of research for the winery, said the anti-smog equipment could cause the tanks to rupture. He made the comments as he led members of the state Air Resources Board on a tour of Gallo’s winery in Fresno. The state board is considering requiring anti-smog equipment at all large wineries.
