Constitution Sculpture in Burbank

Burbank Mayor Michael Hastings is to be commended for commissioning the sculpture by internationally known artist Erwin Binder. If only some of the sculpture’s critics would forget the “obscene” images they have conjured up and appreciate it for what it is: a tribute to the defenders of the Constitution.

When Mr. Binder’s sculpture is in place on its handsome pedestal, it will no doubt still have its critics because they cannot see something identifiable in it. If those critics would only view it with an open mind, they are likely to admit that its just being there will bring warmth and beauty to an otherwise sterile city. The sculpture may also help foster a greater understanding of contemporary art for the general public.

Also thanks to the mayor and his efforts, there will one day be another sculpture--a memorial to the Vietnam and Korean war veterans. We may soon be able to say that Burbank has joined the rest of the country in support of public art.

Growth of the arts can only be accomplished by receiving support from city government, local art groups, private citizens and major corporations, and that is what is finally beginning to happen in Burbank.

One of these days, Burbank may no longer depend on its nearly gridlocked neighbor, Los Angeles, to fill its artistic needs.
