A dramatic change in the weather socked areas in the central plains states that had been basking in mild temperatures as a cold front brought snow and cold temperatures. In Sioux City, Iowa, it had been an unseasonably warm 88 degrees Friday; residents awoke to 2 inches of snow on the ground and a temperature of 32 degrees. Near Lander, Wyo., more than 8 inches fell in about five hours and there was an inch on the ground at nearby Rawlins. But in north-central Minnesota, firefighters brought a major wildfire under control and officials warned the fire danger was very high in Minnesota’s central counties and high everywhere else except the northeastern portion of the state. With temperatures in the 70s and 80s, humidity less than 20% and winds up to 40 m.p.h. dry conditions were even more hazardous.
