College Baseball : Titans’ 14 Hits, 49ers’ 8 Errors Allow Fullerton to Breeze, 13-3
Eighth-ranked Cal State Fullerton had 14 hits and took advantage of eight Cal State Long Beach errors to beat the 49ers, 13-3, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game at Long Beach Saturday.
Fullerton’s Brent Mayne went 2 for 5 with a run scored to extend his hitting streak to 20 games. Fullerton (27-10 overall, 6-2 in conference) has won 22 of its last 26 games.
A six-run fourth inning broke open Fullerton’s 4-3 advantage. The inning included a leadoff home run by Mark Razook, a two-run double by Mayne and a two-run single by Shane Flores. Flores had three RBIs on the day.
Danny DeVille (5-0) struck out four, walked two and scattered seven hits to pick up the victory for Fullerton. Jess Feathers (2-4) took the loss for Long Beach (11-32, 1-7).
Rex Peters and Mike Ross each went 2 for 4. Peters scored three runs and Keith Kaub and Bobby Jones each went 2 for 5 with two runs scored for Fullerton. Ross had two RBIs.
In the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.:
UC Riverside 6-5, Chapman 3-2--Riverside (22-15, 12-5) completed the sweep to take a 2 1/2-game lead over Chapman (27-17-1, 9-7).
In the first game, Riverside took advantage of four errors to score three unearned runs. Dave Mayhall and Mike Grahovac hit back-to-back homers with two out in the sixth to put Chapman ahead, 3-2.
But Riverside tied it at 3-3 on two errors and a walk in the bottom of the inning, and won when Rick Cobb scored on Jeff Goodale’s triple.
David Byrd (6-3) took the loss for Chapman in the first game, despite striking out six and giving up only one earned run.
Riverside’s Mitch Ferrick pitched a shutout for seven innings as Riverside coasted to victory in the second game at Riverside.
In the Golden State Athletic Conference:
Point Loma Nazarene 7-0, Southern California College 4-2--Southern California College (14-20, 8-6) came back to win the second game at SCC behind the two-hit pitching of Josh Johnson.
SCC blew a 4-0 lead and the first game when Point Loma Nazarene (11-23, 4-8) had a five-run rally in the third inning of the first game, led by Brad Hardin’s two-run home run and Bryan Tema’s two-run single.
