I find it amusing that so many readers believe that “Star Trek: The Next Generation” has “forgotten its roots.” A quick look at the credits will tell you that D. C. Fontana, who wrote some of the best episodes of the old series, hasn’t lost her touch, and William Theiss still designs stunning costumes. Besides, quite a few of the original “Star Trek” stories were incredibly ridiculous (remember “The Apple”?). My family and I thoroughly enjoy the new series (as we did the old). And I take it as a sign of enormous progress that the Enterprise now goes “where no one has gone before.”
