PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : St. Bernard Powers 6 Home Runs to Beat St. Monica for League Lead
The roar of the jets from nearby Los Angeles International Airport could not drown out the thunder of the bats Wednesday at St. Bernard.
The Vikings and visiting St. Monica combined for eight home runs with St. Bernard coming out on top, 16-6, in a showdown for first place in the Camino Real League. The Vikings had six homers.
St. Bernard starting pitcher Dan Melendez (4-1) belted three home runs and collected four runs batted in as the Vikings improved to 5-0 in league play and 11-3 on the season. St. Monica fell to 4-1 and 10-4.
“The first (home run), I had two strikes on me and I was just trying to hit the ball,” said Melendez, who has 10 home runs this year. “The second one, I was just trying to drive the ball. But on the third one, I was looking for a home run.”
St. Bernard broke the game open with a nine-run fourth inning when they sent 13 batters to the plate. The big blows were back-to-back homers by Royce Clayton with two men on and Melendez.
Bernard Balthazar and Eric Douglas both added solo shots for the Vikings.
