Local News in Brief : Barricaded Man Wounded
A member of an Inglewood anti-crime task force was shot by police and arrested Tuesday after he fired at officers and held them at bay for three hours outside his laundromat.
Francisco T. Avina, 39, was in stable condition at Centinela Medical Center with gunshot wounds in the ankle, a hospital spokesman said.
In addition to serving on the anti-crime task force appointed by Mayor Edward Vincent, Avina is a member of Inglewood’s advisory Parking and Traffic Commission.
He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer after the confrontation, which began about 2 a.m. after Inglewood police received a report of a disturbance and found Avina barricaded at the laundromat, screaming threats, Sgt. Harold Moret said.
Avina ignored orders to surrender and fired one shot that narrowly missed an officer, Moret said. A SWAT officer later shot Avina with a submachine gun after Avina climbed into the rafters of his business and threatened to kill the policemen at the scene, he said.
Avina was distraught over marital problems and may have been drinking, Moret said.
