Olympic Women’s Basketball Trials Open Today in Colorado
The United States Olympic women’s basketball trials will begin today in three sessions at Colorado Springs, Colo.
Olympic Coach Kay Yow and a panel of 16 coaches from around the country will choose 18 to 20 finalists from the list of 51 invitees after three days of three-a-day practices.
The finalists will be invited to a mini-camp in Raleigh, N.C., June 3-9, and the team will eventually be trimmed to 12.
Among Southland players trying to gain places on the team are Cindy Brown, Penny Toler and Traci Waites of Cal State Long Beach, and Cynthia Cooper, Rhonda Windham and Cheryl Miller of USC. Miller, who is recovering from knee surgery, has requested permission to skip the early trials.
