President Reagan signed an agreement formalizing cooperation with Israel on defense and economic matters. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir signed the agreement in Jerusalem at a simultaneous ceremony. The memorandum of understanding, signed on Israel’s 40th anniversary, formalizes and perpetuates the two nations’ consultative groups, which meet to discuss joint military and security assistance as well as economic development issues. Meanwhile, Israel’s birthday was celebrated with an aerial show and a ceremony honoring veterans of the 1948 War of Independence against five Arab armies.
