The Canadian government formally joined NASA’s space station project with a $1.2-billion commitment through the end of the century to supply a robot space crane. “It’s absolutely critical to have this element in order to both assemble the space station in orbit and also to maintain the facility over the next several decades,” a NASA spokesman said. The agreement, announced in Ottawa by senior government officials, came after assurances the orbital station would not be used for military purposes.
