Rich Earth Has Meeting’s Fastest Mile
Rich Earth ran the fastest mile of the Santa Anita meeting, 1:34 4/5, to win Thursday’s $50,000 allowance feature on a muddy track. The race was moved from the soggy turf course.
Ridden by Chris McCarron and carrying 116 pounds, Rich Earth beat Gorky, with Fernando Toro aboard, by one length. Rich Earth, trained by Ron McAnally for owner Jack Kent Cooke, won $27,500 to increase his career earnings to $236,275 and paid $8, $3.60 and $3.
Gorky was claimed by film producer Albert Broccoli for $100,000, equaling the second-highest figure in Santa Anita history.
