500 Immigrants Apply for Amnesty at Chinese-American Lion’s Club Fair
About 500 people, mainly Asians, applied for legal residence Saturday at an amnesty fair in Westminster that was organized by the Orange County Chinese-American Lion’s Club.
Under the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, the deadline for undocumented immigrants to apply for legal residency is May 4.
“We are very happy to register so many people at the last minute--there are only 11 days to go before the deadline,” club spokesman Harry Yee said.
A delegation of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization service headed by Harold Ezell, INS western regional commissioner, was present at the fair’s kickoff news conference.
Under the act’s provisions, amnesty was granted to undocumented immigrants able to prove that they have lived continuously in the United States since Jan. 1, 1982, and to agricultural workers who can prove that they have worked in the country for at least three months in the 12-month period that ended May 1, 1987.
