Irvine Spectrum, the massive office and industrial center at the juncture of the San Diego and Santa Ana freeways, has had a good week.
Coopervision Inc., which makes products used in eye surgery, said it is putting its headquarters there. The new headquarters will consolidate five offices scattered about Irvine and will employ 700.
And AST Research Inc., a leading maker of personal computers, will also move its headquarters to a 225,000-square-foot building on 14 acres at Alton Parkway and Laguna Canyon Road in Spectrum. AST is consolidating four offices around Orange County and will employ 750 at the new headquarters.
The land and building will cost $30 million. The building is being developed by Birtcher Campbell/AST Partnership.
Coopervision will lease a 240,000-square-foot building to be built by Irvine/O’Donnell Venture, a partnership of the Irvine Co.--which owns the 2,600-acre Spectrum--and O’Donnell, Armstrong, Brigham & Partners.
The lease is worth $21 million over 10 years.
The building will occupy a 13-acre site at Alton Parkway and the Laguna Freeway. Construction begins in the fall and is scheduled to take a year.
