Union Carbide Corp. has asked an Indian high court to review an order demanding $197 million in interim damages for the Bhopal, India, gas disaster victims, court officials report. Carbide lawyers filed a petition to the Madhya Pradesh High Court, court officials in Jabalpur said. The firm’s lawyers argued that the April 4 order for interim payment amounted to the award of damages without trial, saying there was no conclusive evidence that the company had actual control of the Indian plant during the disaster. The Madhya Pradesh high court had reduced the interim payment from $270 million initially demanded by a Bhopal district court last December.
