Ralph Manuel Segura, a Los Angeles civil rights attorney who represented the so-called East L.A. 13 against conspiracy charges in the aftermath of the 1968 high school student walkouts, died Monday evening in Los Angeles of an apparent heart attack. He was 50.

A native of Taos, N.M., he was recognized by several civil rights organizations, including the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund in 1986, for his legal work over the years. Recently, he was credited for setting up local premieres of director Robert Redford’s film, “The Milagro Beanfield War,” that benefited nonprofit Latino groups in California.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters, his mother, three sisters and a brother.
