Conservancy Gets 30 Acres of Open Space

Representatives of the Kaufman and Broad Home Corp. turned over the deeds to 30 acres of open space in the Santa Susana Mountains to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy on Wednesday.

The two parcels of land, which include the rocky Garden of the Gods area just west of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and south of the Simi Valley Freeway, are part of the Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor. Park planners hope the corridor will someday link mountain hiking and equestrian trails ringing the San Fernando and La Crescenta valleys, said Joseph Edmiston, executive director of the conservancy.

The open-space dedication was part of a 1985 agreement between the Los Angeles County Planning Commission and a previous developer, which sold the property where the California West townhouse complex now stands to Kaufman and Broad.

The property turned over to the conservancy is part of the old Iverson Movie Ranch, where hundreds of Western movies and television episodes were filmed.

The 30 acres of dedicated parkland is worth an estimated $2 million to $2.5 million, said Frank Scardina of Kaufman and Broad.
