Iraqi warplanes bombed an Iranian oil refinery and a petrochemical complex, the first major attacks on Iranian urban areas since the two sides halted the latest round of their so-called war of the cities late last month. Baghdad said its jets “penetrated deep into Iran” to hit oil installations at Shiraz and Gachsaran, about 400 miles south of Tehran. Iran, which claimed its gunners shot down two Iraqi jets at Gachsaran, said several people were killed in the raid on Shiraz. Tehran Radio said a third Iraqi jet was also shot down, but it did not say where.
