Roundup : Ellis Carries Tustin Past University in Softball, 13-0

Sophomore Shannon Ellis had three hits and eight RBIs and threw a one-hitter as Tustin High School defeated University, 13-0, Wednesday in a Sea View League softball game at University that was called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Ellis had a pair of bases-loaded triples and a two-run single for Tustin (15-3, 12-0), which took a two-game lead over University (10-2 in league) with three games remaining.

Chanele Chambrone and Tanya McGuire also hit home runs for Tustin.

In another Sea View League game:

Newport Harbor 8, Corona del Mar 5--Kellie Newcombe had two hits and three RBIs for host Newport Harbor (2-14, 1-11). Lea Penhall picked up the victory.

In South Coast League softball:

San Clemente 3, El Toro 1--Michele Shean hit a solo home run, her seventh, in the fourth inning and Wendy Moon hit a two-run home run after Kathy Johnson walked in the fifth inning for first-place San Clemente (16-6, 6-1) at El Toro. Tara Rouch (8-3) pitched a five-hitter with four strikeouts.

Capistrano Valley 1, Irvine 0--Jennifer Smith (15-6) pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts for host Capistrano Valley (16-6, 4-3). Tanya Mitchell scored on a single by Stacey Martnick in the fourth.

Mission Viejo 5, Dana Hills 1--Hilary Schaefer, who went 2 for 2 with 3 runs scored, and Renee Pina, who went 2 for 4, each hit solo home runs to lead host Mission Viejo (16-6, 5-2). Winning pitcher Erin Fitzgerald (8-5) had seven strikeouts.

In Freeway League softball:

Fullerton 6, Sonora 1--Cheryl Lamka and Heather Ichinose had three hits each for host Fullerton (7-13, 4-3).

In Century League Tennis:

Canyon 9, Foothill 9 (Canyon wins on games, 78-71)--Brad Mills and Jose Lynch, Canyon’s No. 1 doubles team, swept their sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, as Canyon (19-0, 9-0) clinched the league title.

In Empire League tennis:

Los Alamitos 14, El Dorado 6--Matt DeSilva swept his singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Los Alamitos (19-2, 9-0). Cameron Carter and Tim Clement won their doubles sets, 6-2, 6-4, 7-5, for El Dorado (10-5, 7-2).

In Orange League tennis:

Anaheim 13, Magnolia 5--The No. 1 doubles of Dean Nguyen and Jack Kuei won, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1, at Magnolia (14-3, 11-3).

In Pacific Coast League tennis:

Woodbridge 10, Laguna Beach 8--The doubles team of Gabe Pate and Mark Alonso swept their sets to lead host Woodbridge (17-3, 10-0).

In Sea View League tennis:

University 20, Tustin 1--Willy Dann swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host University.

In South Coast League tennis:

Dana Hills 13, El Toro 5--Dana Hills (16-3, 9-0) clinched the league championship at home. Ben Stevens and Estaban Saba swept their singles sets to lead Dana Hills. El Toro fell to 15-7 and 7-2.

In Garden Grove League volleyball:

La Quinta 3, Pacifica 0--Tony Price had 11 kills and Tom Potwora had 8 kills and 8 blocks to lead host La Quinta (12-4, 11-0) to a 15-6, 15-11, 15-5 victory.

In Pacific Coast League volleyball:

Laguna Hills 3, Costa Mesa 0--Trent DeVreugd had 11 kills and Brian Fleming 10 to lead host Laguna Hills to a 15-0, 15-8, 15-11 sweep at home over Costa Mesa.

In the Empire League boys’ track and field finals:

Albert Avitta of Loara won the discus with a throw of 56 feet 6 1/2 inches. Mike Linn of Esperanza was second (154-0) and teammate Chuck Underwood (151-4 1/2) third.

In the Empire League girls’ track and field finals:

Cyndi Lee of El Dorado won the discus with a throw of 115-9. Kathy Hopper of Loara (104-7 1/2) was second and Lucille Vega of Cypress (103-9) third.

In the Sunset League girls’ swimming preliminaries:

Debbie Babashoff of Fountain Valley High School broke her league record in the 200-yard freestyle at Golden West College. Babashoff swam it in 1 minute 54.66 seconds, breaking the mark (1:54.86) she set last year. She also won the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.64). Besti Hugh of Marina and Julie Vogt of Fountain Valley also won two events. Hugh finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.82) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.26). Vogt won the 50-yard freestyle (25.02) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.76).
