French secret agent Dominique Prieur, jailed for helping to sink the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior in 1985, will be returned home by France, New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange said. He said her removal from Hao atoll in the South Pacific will be without New Zealand’s permission and in violation of France’s obligation under international law. Prieur and a second agent, Alain Mafart, pleaded guilty to sabotage and manslaughter in the bombing of the vessel in Auckland, New Zealand. Mafart was flown home in December with a stomach ailment, but Prieur was supposed to spend at least another year on the atoll in lieu of a 10-year prison sentence in New Zealand.
