A Pan American Airways Boeing 737 with 34 people aboard safely landed at Long Beach Airport on Saturday when smoke entered the cabin shortly after departure from Los Angeles. An official said detergent on a fan motor may have been the cause.

Flight 280, with 29 passengers and five crew members aboard, landed safely at 7:38 a.m., shortly after takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport on a flight to San Diego, said Alan Loflin, a Pan Am spokesman.

Passengers noticed smoke in the cabin and a fire warning light was set off, he said. “There was a presence of smoke in the cabin,’ he said. “It was definitely not a smoke-filled cabin.”

The 110-seat airliner made an uneventful landing and passengers exited via a staircase. No one was injured and there was no damage to the aircraft.
