Board’s Approval of Canyon Project
The morning I read that the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved the Laguna Laurel agreement to develop Laguna Canyon, I nearly choked on my coffee.
The board approved the development in front of a large crowd of Orange County residents who vehemently opposed development in Laguna Canyon and favored slow growth in Orange County. I was under the impression that the Board of Supervisors was supposed to represent the interests of residents.
Supervisor Harriett Wieder claims the agreement would “alleviate traffic” and it “meant safety on a . . . road that has had 48 deaths.” She says “it meant 75% open space.” Building 3,204 housing units in the canyon will not alleviate traffic. Widening the road will probably increase traffic deaths; most deaths occurred on straightaways, not on curves, and a straightened road allowing higher speeds will only worsen the blood bath. As for retaining 75% open space, we have 100% open space now!
Orange Countians deserve real representation by a Board of Supervisors that supports the interests of the voters. Many Orange Countians favor slow growth and would prefer that our beautiful canyon remain as open space.
