Aztecs Score 35 Runs, Sweep Doubleheader

Steve Montejano had 2 home runs, 7 runs batted in and 5 runs scored as San Diego State swept Utah, 9-3 and 26-4, in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Salt Lake City Saturday.

In the second game, the Aztecs (41-15-1 overall, 18-4 in WAC play) tied the school record for runs--set in 1983 against Fresno State--and for doubles (8), set last year against Wyoming.

Brian Dunn hit a 3-run homer and finished with 5 hits and 7 RBIs; Bill Miller had 5 hits and 7 runs scored, and Jeff Champ had 2 doubles and 4 runs scored. Pitchers Rob Brown (8-3) and Erik Plantenberg (8-0) benefited from SDSU’s 33 hits. Utah, which committed 11 errors, fell to 5-27 and 3-12.

TENNIS

Coronado’s Angelica Galvadon defeated No. 3-seeded Angela Lettiere of Vero Beach, Fla., 6-2, 6-3, to take third place in the girls’ 16-and-under division of the Seventeen magazine tennis Tournament of Champions at Mission Viejo. Galvadon, 14, had lost to Lisa Raymond of Wayne, Pa., in Friday’s semifinals.

San Diego’s Virginia Glass, the fourth-seeded player, started strongly, but second-seeded Dorothy Cheney of Santa Monica gained an 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory in the semifinals of the 60-and-older division at the National Hardcourt Championships at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Cheney will try for her 181st U.S. title today at 11 a.m. against top-seeded June Gay of Piedmont, who beat Tillie Klansnic of Bellevue, Wash., 6-3, 7-5.

San Diego State’s Julio Noriega, who reached the quarterfinals of the WAC championships, has been selected to the all-WAC singles team.

GOLF

Matt Johnson of Utah shot a final-round 68 for a 54-hole total of 211 as the Utes won the WAC championships in Provo, Utah. San Diego State’s Scott Almquist finished 20th with a 225 on the par-72 Riverside Country Club course; teammate Bill Coleman shot a 227. Two strokes behind Johnson was Brigham Young’s Bruce Brockbank. The Aztecs finished sixth. Utah beat Brigham Young by four strokes.

SOFTBALL

Jolanda Schipper’s single scored Mary Geer in the seventh inning to give host United States International University and pitcher Karen Winkler a 1-0 victory over fifth-ranked Arizona in the first game of a doubleheader. Geer was running for Shannon Riley, who opened the inning with a single. Arizona (49-15) won the second game, 2-1. USIU is 24-23.

TRACK

John Cronin of San Diego State won the 800 meters in 1 minute 51.59 seconds at the WAC championships in Provo, Utah, as SDSU finished third. Also for SDSU, Paul Greer finished second in the 1,500 (3:52.23), Floyd Barco second in the 400 (46.86), Patrick Rowe third in the 200 (21.46) and Aaron Braxton fourth in the triple jump (47 feet 8 1/2 inches). Brigham Young finished 147 points ahead of second-place New Mexico.

Einar Cronstedt of Point Loma Nazarene College cleared 15-7 in the pole vault at an open meet at Point Loma to qualify for the NAIA District 3 championships Saturday in Santa Barbara. Also, UC San Diego’s Rick Harper and Tim Vallez qualified for the Division III championships. Harper went 15-1 for second place in the pole vault, and Valley won the 800 meters in 1:51.88.

CREW

The University of San Diego beat UC Irvine by seven seconds in the varsity eight event at East Mission Bay. USD finished the 1,750 meters in 5:14. USD also won the freshman eight event with a time of 5:19.
