POP LP CHART : ‘Faith’ Stays High; Metal on the Rise

Cheap Trick is pulling an Aerosmith. Like Aerosmith, Cheap Trick--a hot ‘70s hard rock band--was cold in the ‘80s. But also like Aerosmith, Cheap Trick has finally come up with a hit album. In just three weeks, Cheap Trick’s “Lap of Luxury” shot up to No. 39 on the Billboard magazine pop album chart. Also in three weeks, the Scorpions’ “Savage Amusement” scurried up to No. 10. Look for two albums that debuted this week--Hall and Oates’ “Ooh Yeah!” (No. 70) and Bruce Hornsby’s “Scenes From the Southside” (No. 94)--to take huge leaps up the chart next week. Gloria Estefan’s “Anything For You” is still the No. 1 pop single. Other fast-rising singles: Prince’s “Alphabet St.” (No. 27), Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana” (No. 29) and Van Halen’s “Black and Blue” (No. 66).

* Critics hoped that the antidote for Poison was time--that this glam-metal band would go down the drain after one hit album. But Poison’s second album, “Open Up and Say Ahh,” is a hit after one week, debuting on the Billboard chart at No. 43.
