The Kansas City Royals Thursday announced the signing of Bill Buckner, a 38-year-old first baseman and designated hitter.

Buckner, who was released by the Angels last Friday, cleared waivers Thursday and agreed to a contract with the Royals for the remainder of this season.

“This gives us another veteran proven hitter and run-producer in our lineup,” Royal General Manager John Schuerholz said.

Buckner hit .209 in 19 games, with 9 runs batted in, for the Angels this season.

In 17 major league seasons, Buckner has a .292 average with 2,607 hits, the most among active players. He has played in two World Series and in one All-Star game. He has recorded more than 200 hits in a season twice and led the National League in batting with a .324 mark in 1980.

Buckner has played for the Dodgers, the Chicago Cubs, the Boston Red Sox and the Angels.

He was scheduled to join the Royals Thursday night in Texas. The Royals will make a roster move before tonight’s game to make room for him.
