Local News in Brief : North County : Discussion Slated on School Funding

Education groups from North Orange County and the Whittier area of Los Angeles County will hold a joint meeting Wednesday to hear the pros and cons of two competing money-allocation initiatives on the June 7 ballot, Propositions 71 and 72.

The North Orange County Education Forum, a nonprofit group, will meet with the Whittier Education Council for an 11:45 a.m. luncheon at the Whittier Elks Lodge, 13620 E. Whittier Blvd.

Lunch will cost $7, and the public is invited. Reservations must be made before the event by calling (714) 879-5543.

The joint meeting will discuss how Propositions 71 and 72 would affect education. Proposition 71, which has the support of many education groups, would specifically raise the amount of money available for schools. Proposition 72 would not increase money for education but would set aside funds for emergencies and reserve a portion of the state’s income for highways and mass transit.

Both propositions would amend the current constitutional limit on state spending set by the Gann Initiative in 1979.
