Ocean View High’s fast start spelled the end to South Torrance’s softball season Thursday.

Ocean View, an at-large entry from the Sunset League, jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings and never allowed the Bay League champions to get on track en route to an 11-0 win in the first round of the CIF Southern Section 4-A playoffs at Walteria Park in Torrance.

The visitors from Huntington Beach scored three runs in the first, then sent 12 batters to the plate in the second and put the game out of reach.

“You have to take what the other team gives you,” said Ocean View Coach Sarah Oakley. “You have be looking to make something happen the whole time.”

South put two runners on in the first but the threat ended as Ocean View pitcher Cindy Schneller retired 20 of the last 21 batters.

“When they got their third run I thought it would be hard to come back because their pitcher was tough,” said South Coach Jerry McIlvaine, whose team finished with a 15-8 record. “We came right back in the first but didn’t produce.”

Schneller struck out 10 and allowed just two hits--a first-inning single by Carleen Kealoha and a sixth-inning single by Rachel Barrman.

South pitcher Ginger Ales (9-7) gave up nine runs on 10 hits before relieved by Julie DeJaifre to start the fourth. DeJaifre gave up five hits and two seventh-inning runs.

Ocean View (15-13) was led by Schneller, who was 4 for 5 with two RBIs, while Jamie Walker knocked in three runs and had three hits.

Leuzinger 5, Fillmore 0--Candy Carrico dominated the game with her pitching and hitting to lead the Olympians (17-6) in a 1-A playoff opener at Leuzinger.

Carrico hit a run-scoring grounder in the first inning, a two-run homer in the third and a solo homer in the fourth. The Pioneer League champions advance to the second round Tuesday against either Baldwin Park or Ontario Christian.

Fillmore managed only four base runners on one hit, two walks and an error.
