South Korean riot police clashed for about four hours with thousands of youths in the southwestern city of Kwangju, firing tear gas to disperse rallies against the government and the United States. Scores of protesters were arrested. The rallies were called to demand a full-scale inquiry into the army’s crushing of a 1980 civilian uprising in Kwangju. The official death toll is about 200, but dissidents contend that the casualties reached at least 1,000.
