Schoovaerts Wins Tokyo Bike Race

Belgium’s Patrick Schoovaerts won the men’s 67.92-mile international bicycle race Sunday and Loo Suyoung of China took the women’s 33.96-mile event.

In the men’s race, the 34-year-old Schoovaerts took the lead in the last three miles and won in 2 hours 28 minutes 1.78 seconds.

Ryouta Ebii of Japan was second in 2:28:20.94, and Japan’s Seiji Saitoh placed third in 2:28:22.41.

A total of 131 men, including 16 foreigners, competed in the race.

In the women’s event, Loo and countrywoman Yan Yenfa pulled away from the leading group of 17 cyclists near the end. Loo won in 1:20:57.98. Yan was second in 1:20:58.11.

Yumiko Suzuki of Japan placed third in 1:20:58.48, followed by Kelly Ann Carter of Canada in 1:20:58.57.

A total of 31 women, including 12 foreigners, competed in the race.
