Cal Poly Pomona Beats Nebraska in Softball Series

Fifth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona broke up a perfect game by Nebraska’s Lori Sippel with two runs in the fifth inning en route to a 3-0 victory over the Cornhuskers Thursday night in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball Division I World Series at Sunnyvale, Calif.

Pomona (56-14) will play No. 6 Arizona (53-16) in a winners’ bracket game tonight at 8. Top-ranked UCLA (49-7) will face No. 2 Fresno State (52-15) at 6.

In the losers’ bracket, No. 7 Nebraska (36-19) will face No. 17 Adelphi (38-13) today at 3. No. 18 Northern Illinois (35-10) faces No. 10 Texas A&M; (42-20) at 1.

After retiring the first 13 Pomona batters, Sippel (21-9) walked Denise Correa with one out in the fifth. Nicky Luce hit a ground ballto shortstop Jane Kremer, whose throw to second went into right field. Correa went to third andLuce stopping at first.

Catcher Ruth Chatwin’s pickoff throw was dropped by Kremer, covering third, allowing Luce to take second. Heather DeLuca singled to score Correa and send Luce to third. Sippel struck out Holly DeLuca but walked Kris Rokosz to load the bases and then walked All-American Alison Stowell to force in the second run.
