Tommy John and Cecilio Guante combined on a seven-hitter, and the New York Yankees made it six straight victories by beating the Seattle Mariners, 5-1, Friday night at Seattle.

But the Yankees also suffered a loss when first baseman Don Mattingly suffered strained muscles in his right side during batting practice before the game.

Mattingly, who suffered the injury swinging a bat, was examined by Seattle team physician Dr. Larry Pedegana, who said Mattingly will probably be sidelined for 7-10 days.

Jack Clark brought home two of the Yankee runs with sacrifice flies. His first tied the score, 1-1, in the fourth inning. His second contributed to New York’s three-run seventh.

Oakland 3, Boston 2--Jose Canseco hit his 12th home run and Mike Gallego hit his first to lead the Athletics at Oakland.

Curt Young (4-2) allowed one run and seven hits in five-plus innings for the victory. He was followed by three relievers, with Dennis Eckersley going the final two innings for his 15th save.

Dwight Evans led off the sixth for Boston with a single, the 2,000th hit of his career, and Mike Greenwell singled to chase Young. Eric Plunk came on to strike out Jim Rice and get Rick Cerone to ground into a double play.

Canseco homered with two out in the first, tying Minnesota’s Kent Hrbek for the home run lead, and Gallego made the score 2-0 with his leadoff homer in the third. Those were the only hits off Bruce Hurst (6-2) in the first four innings.

Toronto 4, Chicago 3--Run-scoring ninth-inning singles by pinch-hitter Juan Beniquez and Nelson Liriano rallied the Blue Jays to victory at Toronto.

Fred McGriff opened the ninth with a single off White Sox reliever Rick Horton and advanced on a sacrifice. Bobby Thigpen replaced Horton and Beniquez singled, making it 3-3. After Lloyd Moseby walked, Liriano singled to right-center.

Duane Ward (1-0) went 2 innings for the victory. Thigpen (1-5) took the loss.

The White Sox lost for the 10th time in 11 games.

Minnesota 7, Detroit 1--Randy Bush’s three-run homer sparked a four-run sixth inning to enable Frank Viola to win his seventh straight start and give the Twins their sixth straight victory.

Viola (8-1) allowed seven hits and struck out eight over seven innings in the game at Minneapolis. Tiger starter Jack Morris (4-6) gave up five runs on six hits in 5 innings.

The Twins broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth. Dan Gladden singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on Morris’ ninth balk of the year and scored on Kirby Puckett’s single. Kent Hrbek walked and Bush hit his fifth homer of the year to give Minnesota a 5-1 lead.

In the eighth, Hrbek hit his 12th homer of the year, an upper-deck shot off reliever Don Heinkel to make it 7-1.

Cleveland 6, Milwaukee 3--Joe Carter hit a solo home run and sacrifice fly at Cleveland to help the Indians win their third straight game and eighth in their last 10.

The Indians are 14 games over .500 for the first time since July 1966. The Brewers lost their third in a row.

Texas 3, Kansas City 2--Mike Stanley doubled off third baseman Kevin Seitzer’s glove in the sixth inning to drive in two runs for the Rangers as the Royals lost their sixth straight game at home.

Jose Guzman (5-3) lost his bid for his first career shutout when Seitzer and Bill Buckner connected for back-to-back doubles in the sixth. Guzman allowed seven hits, walked four and struck out seven, including Danny Tartabull three times. It was Guzman’s third complete game.
