A field of world-class triathletes is scheduled to compete in the Jeep Triprix this morning at 11 at Oceanside Pier.

The men’s field is expected to include the “Big Four”--Mark Allen, Dave Scott, Scott Tinley and Scott Molina. It will be the first time since 1982 that they have been in the same race in California.

Top women include Paula Newby-Fraser, Colleen Cannon and Lisa Laiti.

This is the first of a four-stop tour with a total of $230,000 at stake.

The Triprix course turns the normally long triathlon course into a short layout of multiple loops, enabling fans to see 70% of the race from start to finish.

TRACK AND FIELD

Former UCLA runner Mark Junkerman won the 1,500 meters in 3 minutes 42.25 seconds at the San Diego-Imperial Athletics Congress Championships at Balboa Stadium. Junkerman’s time ranks ninth in the United States, according to a list updated through May 22. For Junkerman, the race was a tune up for the Pepsi Invitational, where he is scheduled to run June 5.

Tim Vallez, a senior from UC San Diego, won the 800 meters in 1:51.86 at the NCAA Division III finals at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. It was the first time someone from UCSD had won an event at the finals, or even made All-American by finishing in the top eight.

Later in the meet, Shannon Quigley became UCSD’s second all-American by placing sixth in the shotput. Her put of 43-1 3/4 was a foot better than her previous best.
