Proposition 70 and Funds for Recreation
Voter approval of Proposition 70, the California Wildlife, Coastal and Parkland Conservation Act of 1988, on June 7 will end a serious shortage of public park, coastal, wildlife and recreation funds. The shortfall is due to legislative inaction during the past several years.
The initiative is supported by scores of conservation and urban and regional parks organizations throughout the state. Northern redwoods, precious wetlands, coastal beaches and streams are slated for acquisition from landowners who are willing to sell.
Specific funds for local projects are $10 million for Laguna Greenbelt; $7 million for Chino Hills State Park; $4 million for City of Irvine Open Space; $4 million for Tecate Cypress Forest, and $1.5 million for Bolsa Chica Linear Park. Per capita and heavy population grants for acquisition and development of park and recreation lands in Orange County amount to an estimated $11,300,781.
Broad support for Proposition 70 confirms the great need for additional park, recreation and wildlife lands in California.
