Golf Roundup : Irwin Shoots a 68, Holds 1-Shot Lead

Hale Irwin shot a 4-under-par 68 and retained his one-shot lead Saturday in the third round of the $1-million Memorial tournament at Dublin, Ohio.

Irwin, whose last victory was in this event three years ago, completed 54 holes over Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village Golf Club course in 206, 10 shots under par.

Curtis Strange and South African David Frost were a shot back at 207.

Strange and Scott Hoch both shot a 64 Saturday to tie the course record, set by Mark McCumber in 1984. Hoch is at 211.

Frost played without a bogey in a round of 68.

Sherri Turner, winner of last week’s LPGA Championship, shot a 3-under-par 69 to take the lead after three rounds of the $325,000 Corning tournament at Corning, N.Y.

Turner, who tied the course record Friday with a 63, eagled the second hole and birdied three of the next five holes before taking a double bogey on the ninth, when she drove out of bounds. She matched par on the back nine to finish with a 54-hole score of 13-under 203.

South Korea’s Ok-Hee Ku, who led Turner by one stroke after two rounds, shot a 71 and dropped back into second place at 204.

Orville Moody ran off six straight birdies on the front side on his way to a 67 and a one-stroke lead over defending champion Bob Charles in the second round of the $275,000 Sunwest Bank Senior PGA tournament at Albuquerque, N.M.
