Some 750 representatives from the music, film and television industries turned out last week for BMI’s annual Motion Picture/Television Awards Dinner. Frances Preston, BMI’s president and chief executive officer, led the ceremonies at the black-tie gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, which saluted the composers and songwriters of the years’ top motion pictures and prime-time network television shows. Among the composers honored for their work in top-grossing motion pictures of 1987: Eric Clapton and Michael Kamen for “Lethal Weapon,” Miles Goodman and Carlos Santana for “La Bamba,” John Williams for “The Witches of Eastwick,” and Alan Silvestri for “Predator” and “Outrageous Fortune.” Among the composers honored for their work in BMI’s top-rated, prime-time network television shows were Bill Cosby and Stu Gardner for “The Cosby Show” and “A Different World,” Al Jarreau for “Moonlighting,” and Mike Post for “L.A. Law.”
