Jackson Meeting
These are the facts with respect to the Anti-Defamation League’s decision not to participate in the recent meeting between the Rev. Jesse Jackson and some members of the Jewish community.
On April 12 the Community Relations Committee of the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles extended a formal invitation to Jackson to meet with its officers and members. The same invitation was extended to all presidential candidates in both political parties.
These meetings are open to the news media.
The Jackson campaign, for reasons of their own, chose not to accept this invitation. Rather, they preferred to meet with selected individuals in the Jewish community behind closed doors (Part I, May 19).
We believe that the proper forum for a meeting with Jackson is a public session under the umbrella of the Jewish Federation Council which has more than 500 member organizations. Such a meeting would be open to the public and the press and not subject to varying interpretations or characterizations.
