More than 20 people have expressed interest in being appointed as a trustee on the Cerritos Community College District board to fill a portion of the term left vacant by board President Barbara J. Hayden, who was recently elected to the Downey City Council.

The Cerritos College board voted last week to appoint a trustee to fill 15 months of Hayden’s remaining 3 1/2-year term. The balance of the term will be filled in the November, 1989, election.

Hayden was elected in 1985 to fill the unexpired term of a college trustee who resigned. Hayden, 47, was reelected in November, 1987, to a full four-year term.

She defeated Downey Councilman James S. Santangelo in the June 7 election. Hayden said she was prevented from holding two elected offices by state law and Downey city ordinance.

She resigned from the seven-member Cerritos College board June 20 and will be sworn in as a councilwoman July 5.

After placing advertisements in local newspapers about the vacancy, the college mailed more than 20 applications to interested persons, said Mark Wallace, college information director. Trustees have set a deadline July 11 to receive all applications. The applications will be reviewed and a new trustee is expected to be named at the board’s regular meeting Aug. 2.
