Residents who use Heartwell Park in the east end of the city may get a new community center, and those who use Admiral Kidd Park may get a bigger park.

Long Beach officials plan to seek a grant from the state to replace the current Heartwell center, which was built in 1964 and has since deteriorated with age and overuse, according to a memo by Parks and Recreation Director Ralph S. Cryder.

The City Council on Tuesday authorized the city manager to move ahead on the application for $1,055,000, which would pay for both the construction of a new larger center at Heartwell Park, 5801 E. Parkcrest, and the purchase of another 1.3 acres next to Admiral Kidd Park, 2125 Santa Fe Ave.

The new community building at Heartwell Park could yield more revenue for the city because it is “an ideal site” for more specialized fee-based classes, Cryder wrote in his memo to the council.
