Gianni Lucke Ferraro, the 32-year-old son of Los Angeles City Councilman John Ferraro, was sentenced Friday to serve one year in County Jail in the April, 1987, vehicular manslaughter death of a pedestrian in Hollywood.

Ferraro was arrested and charged with drunk driving shortly after Walter Schaad, 69, was struck by Ferraro’s 1985 Nissan as Schaad crossed Hollywood Boulevard. Schaad died three days later from head injuries.

In sentencing Ferraro, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Clarence A. Stromwall noted Ferraro’s two previous drunk driving convictions, both in 1976, and placed Ferraro on five years’ probation. Stromwall also ordered Ferraro to enroll in an alcohol rehabilitation program and to perform 250 hours of community service. The judge stayed the jail term until Jan. 20, 1989. According to court documents, Ferraro, a one-time radio reporter and producer in the area, began having a drinking problem at age 19.
