Jerde Partnership to Revitalize 2 Municipal Districts in Japan
The Los Angeles-based Jerde Partnership architectural firm, which gained world-wide recognition for its work on the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and its design of San Diego’s Horton Plaza, has been chosen to revitalize two districts on the island of Kyushu in Japan.
The $150-million Kanebo mixed-use project in the Sumiyoshi district calls for 419,590 square feet of stores, restaurants, condominiums, a hotel, sports and cultural facilities, and municipal facilities, according to Eddie Wang, executive vice president of Jerde.
The $60-million Shimsone district project will be the development of a garden town in the southeast part of the city of Kitakyushu. The town will house 51,894 people, Wang said, with 2,980,000 square feet of space.
Construction is expected to begin next summer, according to Jon Jerde, president of the Jerde Partnership.
