Troy Dalby defeated world record-holder Matt Biondi in the 100-meter freestyle, setting a meet record on the second day of the 21st annual Santa Clara International Invitational swimming meet at Santa Clara.

Dalby, 19, swam the 100 meters in 51.37 seconds, breaking the record of 51.41 set by Mark Stockwell of Australia in 1984. Biondi, 22, finished second in 51:64. Biondi set the world record of 48.74 in 1986.
