The owners of a downtown Los Angeles residential hotel have been charged with violating fire codes and maintaining slum conditions.

Named as defendants in the 29-count misdemeanor complaint filed by the city attorney’s office were Sang In Kim, 37, of West Covina, and Byung Ouk Han, 32, of Cypress, who own the 39-unit Edwards Hotel. If convicted, they could be sentenced to six months in County Jail and fined $1,000 for each count.

Slum conditions at the three-story, brick building include rat and cockroach infestation, accumulations of trash and debris, and numerous fire code violations, including defective fire hoses, missing and defective fire doors and inoperable fire extinguishers, City Atty. James K. Hahn said.
