When It Comes to Working for the Japanese, Old Stereotypes Are Neither Useful Nor Valid
Your “Working for the Japanese” article on the Nikkei (“Japanese-Americans Working for Japanese Companies Chart Path Between Culture,” July 10) was very interesting and well written. However, one small portion of it annoyed me. Describing when Cedrick Shimo was attempting to enlist for World War II, you write that “fearful Americans refused to let him on the train.” While subtle, and I am sure unintentional, this implies that Shimo was not an American, and lends unconscious support to those who still justify the wartime internment. The fact is that Shimo and most of those interned were American citizens whose rights were trampled upon.
