Getty Petroleum Corp. has agreed to pay up to $2.2 million to settle charges that it lured 182 people into leasing gasoline stations that later failed by deceiving them on potential profits, New York Atty. Gen. Robert Abrams announced. Getty, which did not admit guilt in agreeing to the settlement, will pay the failed New York dealers up to $1 million in refunds, or as much as $20,000 each, and forgive up to $1.2 million in outstanding debts to Getty. The settlement ends a 2-year-old civil lawsuit against the Jericho, N.Y.-based company. Abrams charged that Getty, when it was called Power Test Corp., violated state business laws by lying about or concealing past failure rates, sales volume and pricing practices.
