A Santa Ana man was arrested for shoplifting Tuesday after jumping from the second story of an Albertson’s market, cutting his head and breaking a finger, police said.

About 8:50 a.m., a store clerk at the Albertson’s in the 1700 block of East 17th Street noticed a man walking past the checkout stand with a ham and some cheese underneath his clothes, police said.

Store employees put the man, identified by police as Edwardo Humberto Perez, 27, under citizen’s arrest and brought him to the second floor of the store to wait for police.

Employees told police that the man “got away from them and jumped out an open window,” said Santa Ana police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas.

The man landed on the ground and suffered a cut on the back of his head and a broken little finger, Thomas said. Paramedics were called and Perez was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana where he was treated and released. Police then arrested Perez on suspicion of shoplifting. The ham and cheese were worth $8.68, store employees said.
