Local News in Brief : Council Offers Bus Funds

The El Segundo City Council has agreed to give the city’s financially strapped school district up to $30,000 to continue a shuttle bus service for elementary school children if parents or school officials cannot find another way to pay for it.

While unanimously approving an emergency measure this week, the council warned parents that it will not pay for the service after the coming school year.

The action came one week after angry parents confronted school board members over the district’s decision to end a popular shuttle service for children between the city’s middle school and the Center Street elementary school across town, as well as free transportation for athletes.

The district still plans to impose an undetermined transportation fee on athletes beginning this fall.
