Local News in Brief : Trash Collection Fees Rise

Monthly residential rubbish collection fees in Redondo Beach have been increased to $8.10 per unit from $7.68.

The City Council raised the rates, retroactive to July 1, at the request of Western Waste Industries, which has the exclusive city contract for residential garbage collection. The city will continue to take part of the fee for administrative costs, which will now be 42 cents per unit.

It is the fourth fee increase for Western Waste since getting the contract in 1982, when property owners paid $5.10 per unit each month.

The council also tentatively decided this week to create a 7-member Solid Waste and Recycling Commission to develop recycling and public information programs and to research grants that can help pay for recycling programs.

It will be at least two months before the commission is formed, City Manager Tim Casey said. Members of the city’s eight existing commissions are appointed by the mayor with the consent of the council.
