1 Killed, 2 Hurt in Mountain Car Crash
One person was killed and two were injured Tuesday afternoon when their car overturned on a rain-slick mountain highway in rural East San Diego County.
The accident took place at 2:28 p.m. in heavy rain and hail on Interstate 8 near Crestwood Drive, just west of Live Oak Springs, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said. The driver, Carlos Lopez Rodriguez of Mexicali, Mexico, apparently lost control of his car and hit a guardrail, then veered across the center divider and overturned, the spokesman said. The two female passengers were thrown from the car and one, a 32-year-old from Mexicali, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
The other passenger, Soraya W. Lopez, 26, of San Luis, Mexico, suffered major injuries and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center. Lopez Rodriguez, 37, was taken to El Cajon Valley Hospital with moderate injuries.
