Local News in Brief : Vote on 3 Taxes Set

Hermosa Beach voters will be asked in November to approve the continuation of three taxes affecting business licenses, recreation fees and overnight lodgers.

The taxes and fees were originally set by the City Council in 1985 and 1986. However, City Atty. James P. Lough has told the council that Proposition 62--which was approved in November, 1986--requires that voters approve taxes. New taxes require a two-thirds vote, but confirmation of existing taxes requires only majority approval, Lough said.

The City Council voted 4 to 1 to put the measure on the Nov. 8 ballot. Councilwoman June Williams dissented, saying it is “extremely unfair to the voters” to combine three taxes in one measure.

The city imposes an 8% bed tax on hotel and motel guests and a $3,500 park and recreation facilities tax on each new residential unit. The business license fees vary depending on the type of business.
