Chinese Official Fired for Doctoring Birth Statistics

A family planning official in northeast China has been fired and other officials have been disciplined for keeping population statistics down by under-reporting births, the New China News Agency said Thursday.

A senior official of the family planning committee in Xiuyan county of Liaoning province was removed for failing to report more than 300 births, it said. Other officials were disciplined.

Several towns in the county were forced to return cash bonuses received for keeping births within planned levels.

China has imposed a policy of one child per family to control its population growth.
