Running back Doug DuBose of the San Francisco 49ers has been suspended by the National Football League for 30 days, apparently because he failed a league drug test, 49er Coach Bill Walsh announced Thursday at Rocklin, Calif.

Walsh said that DuBose’s suspension is the result of the NFL’s new get-tough policy this season.

“He has been placed on non-football injury status and will be unable to participate in a game for 30 days,” Walsh said. “He most likely will be able to practice within two weeks. It’s in the illness category and he will have the best professional counseling.”

When asked specifically if drugs were involved, Walsh said, “That is included in that non-football category. He’s been dealing with his non-football injury problem extremely well, but a dictum did come down from the league office, and his name was included. It was a league decision, not a 49er decision.”

Walsh said the 49ers were the first team tested this season because of their early reporting date, and the NFL will issue more suspensions in the next few days.

At Thousand Oaks, starting right tackle Kevin Gogan left the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp after being placed on reserve for 30 days, team officials said.

Cowboy President Tex Schramm said that Gogan has “a non-football illness” and added: “Kevin will not participate in team activities during this period of time.”
